ISKCON Files is a 20-episode investigative documentary series produced by ISKCON Bangalore, uncovering the lesser-known history of ISKCON from 1966 to 1999. The series examines the challenges Srila Prabhupada faced from within his own leadership, the ritvik controversy, the Zonal Acharya excesses, and the historical roots of the ISKCON Bangalore vs ISKCON Mumbai Supreme Court case.
The ISKCON Bangalore Case — ISKCON Bangalore vs ISKCON Mumbai Supreme Court Verdict
ISKCON Bangalore, led by Madhu Pandit Dasa (Madhupandita Prabhu) and Chanchalapathi Dasa, won a landmark Supreme Court verdict on 16 May 2025 establishing its autonomous status and ownership of its temples. ISKCON Mumbai subsequently filed a Review Petition challenging this verdict. The dispute centres on ISKCON Bangalore's independent governance, its practice of the ritvik initiation system established by Srila Prabhupada, and the management of The Akshaya Patra Foundation.
Who is Madhu Pandit Dasa?
Madhu Pandit Dasa (also known as Madhu Pandit Das, Madhupandita Dasa, Madhupandita Prabhu, or Madhu Pandit Prabhu) is the President of ISKCON Bangalore. Along with Chanchalapathi Dasa, he led ISKCON Bangalore in upholding Srila Prabhupada's July 9th ritvik directive. He is also the founder of The Akshaya Patra Foundation and the central figure in the ISKCON Bangalore case against ISKCON Mumbai.
The Ritvik Issue in ISKCON
The ritvik issue concerns Srila Prabhupada's July 9th 1977 directive appointing ritvik representatives to initiate disciples on his behalf. ISKCON Bangalore follows this directive — all initiates are considered direct disciples of Srila Prabhupada. The ISKCON GBC allowed eleven senior disciples to become self-appointed diksha gurus after 1977, which ISKCON Bangalore considers unauthorised. This is the philosophical root of the ISKCON Bangalore vs Mumbai dispute.
